The short answer
For most people, BBL HEROic broadband light is the go-to treatment for sun damage. It targets brown spots, freckling and redness, and every BBL treatment at Epiphany includes a SkinSmooth step for fine lines and texture. For rough texture, pores and leftover pigment, we often stack it with MOXI laser. Daily SPF 30+ and a retinoid from our medical-grade skincare line help protect your results.
Understanding your skin
Sun damage, also called photoaging, builds up quietly over years. Knowing your risk factors helps us choose treatments and protection that actually work for you.
UVA light reaches every layer of your skin and is linked to wrinkles and long-term damage (Cleveland Clinic).
UVB light causes sunburn and most skin cancers (Cleveland Clinic). Every burn adds to the damage you see later.
High-altitude living and weekend sun are both risk factors (Cleveland Clinic), which describes a lot of Utah County hikers, skiers and boaters.
People who use tanning beds often see wrinkles, spots and loose skin within a few years, and some within a year (American Academy of Dermatology).
Time outdoors as a child or teen raises your risk of sun damage later in life (Cleveland Clinic).
Light skin, freckles, light hair and blue or green eyes all raise your risk (Cleveland Clinic).
Know your skin
Natural aging happens to everyone: skin gets thinner, drier and less elastic over time. But sun exposure is the greatest single factor in how skin ages (MedlinePlus). Sun damage adds spots, redness, spider veins and rough texture on top of normal aging (Cleveland Clinic).

What you see
Brown spots, freckling, blotchy redness, spider veins, rough or uneven texture
Thinner, drier, paler skin and fine lines
Where it shows
Face, neck, chest, hands and arms, wherever the sun hits most
All over, including skin that's usually covered
Main cause
Years of UVA and UVB exposure
Time, genetics and hormone changes
Treatments that fit
BBL + SkinSmooth, MOXI, chemical peels, daily SPF
SkinTyte, Sculptra, microneedling, a retinoid
Most faces show both. The good news is that the sun-related part, like spots and redness, is often the part that responds fastest to treatment.
Your options
We match the treatment to what the sun left behind. Here's what each option does best, with evidence from leading medical sources.
Best for: brown spots, freckling, redness and dull skin
Broadband light targets pigment and redness, and every BBL here includes SkinSmooth for fine lines and texture. BBL is a next-generation form of intense pulsed light (IPL), and in a review of 41 clinical trials, IPL showed efficacy rates of 74.6–90% for sun spots (J Cosmet Dermatol). BBL on the body is popular too, especially the chest, as well as hands, arms and shoulders.
Best for: keeping skin clear year after year
In a Stanford pilot study, BBL treatment shifted 1,293 of the 2,265 genes changed by aging to look more like young skin (Journal of Investigative Dermatology). It was a small study, but it's one reason we like regular maintenance.
Best for: rough texture, pores, freckling and uneven tone
A gentle fractional laser that refreshes the skin's surface with little downtime. Laser and light treatments are useful for reducing age spots and other early signs of skin aging (AAD).
Best for: mild spots, dullness and rough texture
Dermatologists use chemical peels for age spots and wrinkles from the sun (AAD). A good option between laser sessions or for a lighter refresh.
Best for: protecting results and gentle fading at home
Prescription retinoids are used for sun-related wrinkles, age spots and blotchy skin (AAD). We'll pair one with Alastin and a daily SPF that fits your skin.

Know when to get checked
Most sun damage is cosmetic, but not all of it. Rough, scaly, sandpaper-like spots may be actinic keratoses, a common skin precancer that more than 40 million Americans develop each year (Cleveland Clinic). Any spot that is black, growing, bleeding, has an irregular border or an unusual mix of colors should be checked by a doctor (Mayo Clinic).
We're an aesthetics and hormone clinic, not a skin cancer clinic. If we see a spot that needs a closer look, we'll recommend you have it checked by a dermatologist or your primary care provider before we treat it. Honest care comes first.
Protect your results
Use broad-spectrum SPF 30+ every day, even when it's cloudy or cold (AAD). Daily use measurably slows skin aging (Annals of Internal Medicine).
Reapply every two hours outdoors and wear a wide-brimmed hat and UPF 40–50 clothing (Mayo Clinic).
Avoid peak UV hours when you can and skip tanning beds altogether (Cleveland Clinic).
Sun exposure keeps happening, so new spots can too. Regular BBL maintenance and a nightly retinoid help keep skin clear between bigger treatments.

Your questions, answered
Can sun damage be reversed?
The DNA damage underneath can't be undone, but treatments can greatly improve how sun-damaged skin looks (Cleveland Clinic). Spots, redness and rough texture often respond well to BBL and MOXI. Daily sunscreen keeps new damage from piling on.
How many BBL treatments will I need?
For age spots, laser and light treatments usually take two to three sessions (Mayo Clinic). Heavier sun damage may need more. At your consult we'll look at your skin and give you a realistic plan, plus a maintenance schedule if you want one.
Is BBL safe for every skin type?
Not always. Darker skin is more prone to burns and dark marks after laser and light treatments (AAD), and heat from light treatments is thought to worsen melasma (Mayo Clinic). We'll check your skin type and history first and recommend a safer option if BBL isn't the right fit.
Will my sun spots come back?
Treated spots often stay lighter, but more sun can cause new ones. Using a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ and protective clothing helps keep spots from returning (AAD). That's why many patients choose yearly maintenance.
When is the best time of year for sun damage treatment?
Fall and winter are popular because it's easier to stay out of the sun while your skin heals. You can treat sun damage any time of year, as long as you protect your skin afterward. We'll go over aftercare at your visit.
How much does sun damage treatment cost in American Fork?
